We got up early for our flight from Melbourne to Alice Springs by way of Adelaide. At breakfast, Marsha had her first taste of Vegemite. Check out the first picture in this post for her reaction. We ate lunch at the airport in Adelaide. First time I've ever had a poached egg on top of a chicken Caesar salad!
After landing in Alice Springs, which is officially in the Outback, we checked into the Doubletree by Hilton and went downstairs for the children's program that they put on especially for our group. Cute kids, but kind of rowdy. The program has worked well to give underprivileged kids a direction in life and keep them out of trouble. There is a very high (80%) rate of alcohol abuse among Aboriginals, so the kids need a purpose.
After the program, we got on the coach and headed for the bush to experience a bush dinner. And we were in the bush! No electricity except for a little generator, a loo (outhouse) on wheels and a wood fire. It was great! John taught us how to make bush bread called Spotted Dog. It was quite a show!
The food was great and the bread was delicious. John had a long iron rod with a hook bent onto the end. He hooked the handle on the "aluminium" camp oven (like a Dutch oven with a loop handle on the pot), gave it three swings and flipped it onto its top, twice! The bread came out of the camp oven and landed perfectly on the lid. He scraped off the excess flower that he had put on the bottom of the camp ovens to keep the bread from burning. Then he sliced it up and each of us put butter and syrup on at least one slice and gobbled it down. It was delicious!
