2017 Jan 06 The National WWII Museum - Mostly!

The time we spent touring The National WWII Museum was very enjoyable. Getting there, eating in the snack bar, and getting back to the B&B, not so much! We left the B&B around 10 this morning. According to Richard, who served our breakfast, all we had to do was get on the Rampart St. trolley a half block down the street and buy a $3.00, 24 hour public transportation pass, which is a great deal. Then ride to Canal St., jump on the Canal St. trolley to Magazine St., catch the Magazine St. bus and it would drop us off at the front door of the Museum. Keep in mind that it was raining and the wind was blowing at 20 mph.

We got on the Rampart St. trolley without a problem. We got off at Canal St. without a problem. Finding the Canal St. trolley was a problem! Visualize a large dog preparing to lie down, but his first revolution covered four corners of an intersection of two four-lane streets. It's raining and blowing. We figured out where to catch the Canal St. trolley and asked the driver where to get off to catch the Magazine St. bus to go to The National WW II Museum. He told use when it was time to get off and pointed to where we were to catch the Magazine St. bus. We walked in the direction he pointed. It's raining and blowing. No bus stop. No bus. No trolley! After asking directions, we walked about two blocks down Canal St. to Magazine St. and turned the corner. No bus stop. No bus, so we kept walking. After about three blocks (it's raining and blowing) we stumbled upon a bus stop where we stood in the rain and wind for about ten minutes before the bus showed up.
Now, we've got it made! A bunch of people on the bus were going to the museum., so after several blocks, the driver stopped the bus and announced the we were to walk to the corner, take a right, walk to the next corner, take a left, walk a ways and the main entrance to the museum will be on the left. Did I mention that it was raining and blowing?
So, by the time we get to the museum and stand in line to pay the entrance fee, it's 11:30. We toured the Road to Berlin and Road to Tokyo sections which were very impressive, even though the museum was very crowded. By then, we were hungry. The main restaurant in the museum was wall-to-wall, so we decide to walk to another museum building and go to the Jeri Nims Soda Shop for a quick sandwich. It's still raining and blowing.
Marsha and I each ordered a Market Salad and iced tea. My order number was 45. After about 20 minutes, they passed my number, so I went to the counter to inquire. They were out of salad of any kind. Wonder when they planned to tell me! I ordered two ham & cheese sandwiches and was told that my number was now 64! What? After another 20 minutes, we finally ate. Jim and Bonnie had already finished eating. They got the last two Chef Salads!
We toured a couple more museum buildings (there are five in all) before walking out the gate directly onto Magazine St. Great! There's the bus stop and here comes the bus. As we boarded, we mentioned that we were headed to Canal St. to catch the trolley. The driver informed us that we had to walk to the other side of the museum complex to catch THAT bus. It's raining and blowing. Oh, and the temperature was 41 degrees, down from the 47 degree high we had this morning.
So, I won't bore you with the rest of the trip back to the B&B, but it was pretty much more of the same. Since Buffa's is just around the corner from the B&B, we went there for a light dinner (Marsha and I finally got a salad) before walking, in the wind and rain, back to our rooms.
Tomorrow's high temperature is supposed to be 39 with 20 mph winds. Oh, goodie! We'll buy another transportation pass and see how it goes!
