2012 - Sept 19-22 Gathering of Aframes at Mark Twain Lake, MO

On Wednesday, we were about the fourth Aframe to arrive at the Ray Behrens Campground at Mark Twain Lake. It was only four days earlier that Marsha and I had left our campsite at Acadia Notional Park in Maine! Time to relax!

We did the usual Gathering stuff. It was great to get-together with all of our aframe friends who could make it to the Gathering. The weather was sunny, cool and crisp. The best (IMHO) for camping, but also telling us that another camping season will soon come to a close. We've got a couple more outings planned for this year before we hole up for the winter, so check back when you can.

We went to the visitor center and checked out the information about the construction of the dam, which was put into service in 1984. Also, near the visitor center, was a Civil War Encampment which we found interesting.

On Saturday, a guest Aliner showed up and Paul McCray introduced himself to me! What a shocker! He was born in St. Louis and, as far as we know, is no relation to me.

John & Jan cooked the brats for the potluck and everyone contributed a dish. As usual, there was way more food than we could eat.

Our friends, Rick & Tammy from Springfield (not Aframers) have been working their tails off since they bought a house trailer and put it on their lot earlier this year. The lot is only a few miles from where we were camped, so even though Rick & Tammy weren't able to be there this weekend, we set out to see if we could find it. It was pretty easy to find. What a nice spot they have! It sits way back off the road and will be a great get-away for them to go to for relaxing vacations. It's less than two hours from Springfield.

So, that's about it for now. Enjoy the pictures.

2012 - Sept 15-17 Southwest Harbor, ME to Home

We left the campground in Maine on Saturday morning and drove 512 miles to camp at Kettletown State Park in Southbury, CT. It was almost dark when we got there. We registered and were in our campsite before we realized that there was no electrical hook-up. No big deal. We had three pieces of wood that we brought with us from Main, so we built a fire and roasted some dogs. By the time I remembered to take a picture of the campsite, it was dark and I didn't get one in the morning either. Sorry! We skipped showering in the morning because the showers were pretty "rustic."

Sunday, we drove 600 miles and ended up in Mt. Gilead State Park in Mt. Gilead, OH. Don't ever camp there! We were really looking forward to taking a shower since we skipped it in Connecticut, but this place had NO showers. The only toilets were filthy, stinky pit toilets.Yuck! So we washed our hair in a tub on the picnic table and went inside the camper to take a sponge bath.

Monday morning, we set a record: 35 minutes from the time our feet hit the floor until we were outa there! We stopped at the first fast food place, Burger King, to use the bathroom and have breakfast. After breakfast, we drove 445 miles to get home at 3:45. We stopped in Camby, IN to pick up a Stihl Backpack Leaf Blower that I bought on eBay, local pick-up only. Man that shower is going to feel good!

It was a great trip. We pulled the camper 3,075 miles. Now we have all day tomorrow to mow the lawn, do laundry, get groceries, get a haircut, and be ready to go to a rally at Mark Twain Lake in Missouri on Wednesday.

Stay tuned!

2012 - Sept 14 Acadia Nat'l Park Cruise & Day Mountain Carriage Ride

We got on the boat for the Acadia National Park Cruise at 10:00am. The cruise took 2.5 hours with 45 minute stop on Little Cranberry Island. Lots of interesting sights, many of which had to do with lobster fishing, which is the main industry for the 75 year-round residents of Little Cranberry Island.

After the boat tour we ate lunch at The Docksider in Southeast Harbor. Good food, but not much of it for the price.

After lunch we picked up a few groceries and I caught a twenty minute nap before we headed for Wildwood Stables to catch the carriage ride to the summit of Day Mountain. It was a nice ride, but it would have been nicer if it weren't for the fog blocking most of the scenic views.

After the carriage ride, we went to Nemo's for a burger and a "medium" sized 32 oz. draft. Then it was back to the camper to post the day's activities for you to enjoy.

We're heading west as soon as we get up in the morning, so don't be surprised if you don't see much in the way of additional posts on this trip. Then, again, you never know!
